2020 Week 2 Private School Recap for Dave Campbell's Texas Football

Much like it did a week earlier against Knoxville Catholic, the Cedar Hill Trinity Christian Tigers raced out to a quick start Friday night on the San Antonio Cornerstone Christian Warriors.

The Tigers put up 19 points - including two Shadeur Sanders touchdown throws - before Warriors quarterback Lucas Coley could answer with a 33-yard touchdown strike - his first of four on the night - just before halftime to cut Cornerstone's deficit to 19-7.

Coley's second scoring throw - a 20-yard toss into double coverage at the front left corner of the end zone to sophomore standout Jaylen Gardner - was the only score of the third quarter to bring Cornerstone within five, 19-14.

However, Cedar Hill Trinity responded with a three-yard scoring throw from Sanders to running back Emari Matthews midway through the fourth quarter and after Cornerstone drove to the Tigers 30-yard line before fumbling the ball away - one of four turnovers on the night, Sanders teamed up with Kavion Williams for a 68-yard catch-and-run that gave the Tigers a 33-14 lead that Cornerstone wouldn’t be able to overcome.

The Warriors would score twice in the last six minutes of the game - on Coley touchdowns throws to Gardner and Ivan Hoyt, but it wasn't enough to keep Cedar Hill Trinity Christian from moving to 2-1 with a 40-28 victory in a contest that featured 904 yards of total offense.

Cedar Hill Trinity Christian moves to 2-1 with the win, while San Antonio Cornerstone Christian evens its mark to 1-1.

Rain and COVID-19 had an impact in two of the other top 11-man contests scheduled for Friday evening.

Field conditions at Spring's Farm League Park on Friday afternoon forced the Spring Legacy School of the Sports Sciences and Tomball Christian Homeschool contest to be moved to Saturday evening.

And Saturday's weren't much better, with multiple rain delays and a second-half downpour, but the Titans got a fourth-quarter touchdown from Quinton Ivory to overcome a 7-2 halftime deficit giving former Tulsa Hurricanes defensive back Darrell Williams his first win as Spring Legacy's head coach.

Sophomore Elijah Fields led the Titans defensively with 15 tackles and four sacks, one of which included tackling Tomball Christian quarterback Noah Rose out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Early in the week, COVID-19 made its first mark in non-UIL football as the Cedar Hill DasCHE Spartans were forced to cancel its highly-anticipated matchup with Nike Dallas Football Club due to a positive COVID-19 result within its program.

Head coach Sam Raybourn anticipates that the Spartans will be able to play its September 11 contest against Founders Classical Academy of Lewisville, which won its first game over the season 16-14 over the Atlas Homeschool Rattlers.

The Eagles made a pair of touchdown passes and two 2-point conversion passes stand as Founders denied the Fort Worth-based Rattlers their first win in program history after going 0-10 in its inagurual ledger a year ago.

Elsewhere, Waco Texas Wind squared up its record at 1-1 with a 39-0 win over Malakoff Cross Roads in Riesel on Saturday afternoon.  The Bobcats, who lost to Cedar Hill DasCHE last week 41-12, are playing a sub-varsity schedule in 2020 as they do not have enough juniors and seniors to field a competitive and will look to return to a UIL district for football in 2022.

Oklahoma City Casady School was the first SPC team to compete as an independent in 2020 as the Cyclones went to Enid, Oklahoma on Friday night to take on Oklahoma Bible Academy.

After a pair of 22-yard runs, the Trojans got an 11-yard touchdown pass from Bodie Boydstun to James Cheatham with more than eight minutes to go in the second quarter in addition to Cheatham's two-point conversion run that would prove to be the difference resulting in an 8-0 win for Oklahoma Bible Academy.

Weather also kept Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine's third-ranked private school team out of action as nearly six inches of rain kept Bastrop Tribe Consolidated from taking the field Friday night on the road against UIL Avalon.

Coach Brent Goleman's squad will travel Friday night to face off against Calvert, who was one of three ranked UIL Division II teams that defeated private and parochial school programs in week one.

Second-ranked Richland Springs opened its season with a 55-8 win over the Austin Royals, who fell to 1-1.

Calvert, one spot behind the Coyotes, allowed Waco Parkview Christian Academy to stay close, 13-0, for a half before spiriting away with a 46-0 victory that sent the Pacers to 0-2.

Tenth-ranked Grandfalls-Royalty sent Permian Basin Athletic CO-OP to 0-2 with a 54-6 win over the Renegades.

Five private and parochial school six-man programs moved to 2-0 on the young season.

Azle Christian School (TCAF), Burnet Smoking for Jesus Ministry Christian School (T-CAL), Haslet Heritage Christian Academy (TCAF) and Johnson County Sports Association (TAIAO) all posted mercy rule wins while the Fort Bend Chargers Homeschool (TAIAO) defeated Chester, 71-39.

Last week's Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine's private school coach of the week Gary Rushing's Crusaders blanked Bluff Dale 46-0, needing only 159 yards of total offense led by sophomore Camden Logan who scored all three times he touched the football -- two on the ground and a 13-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Chandler Boling.

Five different players scored touchdowns for Smoking for Jesus in their 62-6 win over San Antonio Town East Christian in La Vernia Friday night as Marvin Glaspie II led the way with two touchdowns passing (3 of 3 for 81 yards) while running and catching for one more each.  Jonathan Frazier scored twice - catching a pass from each team's quarterback, while Isaac Legier threw for two and caught a third.

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Hester led Haslet Heritage Christian Academy to a 64-14 win over Decatur Victory Christian Academy with two touchdown passes and 114 yards on 12 of 19 passing while adding a third on the ground.  Senior Ethan Reid and sophomore Rainer Gahagan combined for four touchdowns rushing and 135 yards on 15 carries.  Reid also nabbed five of Hester's passes for 26 yards.

Johnson County Sports Association senior quarterback Joshua Wallace spread his five touchdown tosses to four different receivers as JCSA blanked the Covington Owls, 45-0.  Hester was 15 of 19 in the air for 138 yards, while junior Seth Wallace led the ground attack with 91 yards on four carries.

Elsewhere, the Conroe Northside Lions Homeschool team, who will compete in TAIAO this season, gave veteran head coach Mike Helmer his 193rd career coaching win as the Lions defeated Houston Texas Christian 35-32 at Conroe's Booker T. Washington Park on Friday, while Lantana Harvest Christian Academy won its first game in school history with a 55-20 win on the road over Crowley Nazarene Christian Academy.

Individually, Brazos Valley Mustangs freshman quarterback Pierce Goodwin had 288 yards total offense, despite BVCHEA's 61-36 loss to the Victoria Homeschool Cobras.  He was 24 of 43 for 236 yards in the air with two touchdown throws and ran for another 52 yards on 14 carries.  BVCHEA is now 0-2.

Tyler King's Academy seniors quarterback Win Fox and running back Preston Abel each hand their hands in five touchdowns in the Knights' 68-19 win over the Rogues of Tyler Willowbend.  Fox had five touchdown passes on eight of 11 passing for 149 yards, one of which went to Abel.  Abel had 204 yards total offense, including 154 yards on seven carries, four of which went for scores.

2020 Week 2 Private School Preview for Dave Campbell's Texas Football

Two of Texas’ top six private and parochial high school quarterbacks will square off Friday night in San Antonio’s Warrior Stadium when San Antonio Cornerstone Christian’s Lucas Coley and Cedar Hill Trinity Christian’s Shadeur Sanders lead their squads into a marquee week two matchup.

Coley, the Arkansas commit, last week led his team in a come-from-behind 24-20 season opening win on the road against Corpus Christi Calallen, while Sanders picked apart the Irish of Knoxville (Tennessee) Catholic to return to the Lone Star state with a 49-14 win, evening their mark at 1-1.

And the Tigers might have pitched a shutout if it were not for defensive penalties that preserved second quarter scoring drives for Knoxville Catholic.

Cornerstone Christian, who gave up 253 yards and all three Wildcat touchdowns on the ground, will have to fend off an imposing Cedar Hill Trinity Christian offensive line which is anchored by six-foot-four, 350-pound senior Elijah Bowser, a preseason Dave Campbell’s Texas Football offensive line top 40 selection.

The two teams met a year ago in the middle of what proved to be the Tigers’ last run at a TAPPS title, earning Cedar Hill Trinity Christian a 24-0 home shutout win.

After traveling to Wall next week, the Warriors will begin their quest for a Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship (TCAF) championship in two weeks – and one of the teams that they’ll have to get through will be the Legacy School of Sports Sciences in Spring.

The Titans, who move to TCAF after starting in the Texas Christian Athletic League (T-CAL), will square off Friday night in its season opener against the only 11-man team remaining in the San Antonio-based league, Tomball Christian Homeschool.

The two teams met in the 2018 T-CAL state championship with the Titans coming away with the 27-13 title win.

Legacy, which went 3-6 a year ago, aims to bounce back from a 2019 that started off with high hopes against the Warriors, who opened 2020 last Saturday evening with a 26-8 road win over UIL 2A Thrall.

Junior quarterback Noah Rose and sophomore running back Silas Shivers combined for 294 yards of total offense for Tomball Christian against Thrall.

Head coach Chris Criswell’s team is ranked sixth nationally by the National Homeschool Football Association among 22 homeschool 11-man teams from Michigan to Georgia and Virginia to Texas.

Two of Texas’ other top 10 nationally-ranked homeschool teams will pair off Friday night when the second-ranked Cedar Hill DasCHE Spartans (1-0) will face the eighth-ranked Nike Dallas Football Club (1-0).

Known previously as the Blue Angels of Dallas HSAA (Home School Athletic Association) Blue, Nike Dallas FC hasn’t defeated DasCHE since the Spartans’ first year in 2014.

The Spartans hold a seven-game winning streak, including last year’s 50-2 win in the Texas state homeschool championship tilt.

However, the Allen-based program journeyed to Oklahoma City last Friday night and thoroughly handed Patriots Home School a resounding 39-12 defeat.

The Spartans, who have won the last two Texas state homeschool championships, opened with a 41-12 road win against UIL independent Malakoff Cross Roads.

Two of the remaining three 11-man games for Friday will see Malakoff Cross Roads travel to Waco to take on the 0-1 Texas Wind, who lost to Hico in week one, while the Atlas Homeschool Rattlers will be looking for its first win in school history – after an opening year 0-10 mark – against Lewisville Founders Classical Academy.

And the first Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) team -- Oklahoma City Casady School -- will compete on Friday as an independent after the 17-school organization cancelled their fall sports championships two Fridays ago.

The Cyclones will blow into Enid, Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Bible Academy, who went 6-5 and made the first round of the OSSAA football playoffs a year ago.

Athletic director Steve McCarthy confirmed to LSCSN that the Cyclones are currently scheduled to play six games, including a home and away with Arlington Oakridge School in mid- and late October.

Nineteen games involving 26 non-TAPPS six-man programs are set to take to the gridiron on Friday.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s third-ranked private school squad Bastrop Tribe Consolidated will travel to Avalon on Friday to face the 0-1 Eagles.

The Warriors, led by last week’s Player of the Game Samuel Osborn, opened its season with a 46-0 win over the Brazos Valley Mustangs in TAIAO non-district action.

Three programs hit the road Friday night with the challenge of facing three of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s top ten UIL 1A Division II teams.

The Odessa Permian Basin Athletics CO-OP (0-1) travels to take on the seventh-ranked Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys (1-0).

Defending UIL 1A Division II state champion Richland Springs will open its season ranked third and hosting the Austin Royals (1-0), while TCAF contender Waco Parkview Christian Academy (0-1) will travel to do battle against second-ranked Calvert (0-1).

Pacers head coach Josh Hayes says that coach Ja’Marcus Ashley’s team is fast and very well-coached.

“It was obvious watching their film against Borden County,” said Hayes. “They play fast, smash-mouth football and I can’t wait for the game.”

Like many other contests in this historic 2020 pandemic season, the Pacers draw Calvert thanks to COVID-19.

After McLennan County put the brakes on in-person instruction, Hayes cleared his schedule only to start adding teams back on when Parkview Christian administration decided it would start on-time, including sports, after Texas’ attorney general stated the private, religious-affiliated schools were not bound by preventative county health orders.

“I called Bluff Dale, but they had just filled the game (with Hayes’ week one opponent Azle Christian) a few minutes before I called,” he said.  “So then I got online and saw where Coach Ashley had posted about needing a week two game.”

The order for Parkview is tall and big but so is the Pacers college prospect, CJ Lanehart.

“He is such a big, athletic kid that teams always plan for him,” Hayes said.  “We will need big games defensively from DL Jacob Irvin, DL Jotham Craven, LB Josh Gaddy and DBs Gaines Orewiler and Jasper Watson.”

Ten teams, aside from Bastrop Tribe Consolidated, will be looking to extend their record to 2-0, including the only game pitting unbeatens against each other -- Decatur Victory Christian Academy and Haslet Heritage Christian Academy.

And one team – the Conroe Northside Lions – will be making its six-man debut, hosting Houston Texas Christian School, behind a coach with a championship pedigree, Mike Helmer.

Helmer took nine teams to TAPPS 11-man state championship contest between 2000 and 2016 at three different schools.

He led Rockwall Christian Academy to back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002 and more recently, Cedar Hill Trinity Christian to the 2014 Division III title with a 54-18 decision over League City Bay Area Christian.

2019-2020 Lutheran High School Soccer Awards Announced

August 7, 2020 – Nineteen girls’ high school soccer players from among the nearly 200 Lutheran high schools in the USA and Canada will receive the Lutheran All-American Association's (LAAA) 1st Team All-American Award. This honor will be awarded annually to recognize the best players at their respective positions from their high school season.

In all, 70 players across North America were named to the 1st Team, 2nd Team, Honorable Mention or Freshman Team High School All-American teams. At the end of the high school season Coaches and Athletic Directors nominate student-athletes with high athletic, academic, and spiritual integrity.

With the unusual closure of many schools/sports activities in the spring it is difficult to figure out how to honor players from partial and incomplete seasons. The LAAA board has decided to accept nominations from states where girl’s soccer is played in the spring. Players that were awarded LAAA All American status last year, if they were still participating on the team this season, they will be awarded at the same level they already received. The Board believes it would be unfair to deny them the honor when our historical records show repeat nominees maintaining (at least) the same level of recognition in successive seasons.

The high schools are contacted annually to submit nominees for the All American and Ethics & Sportsmanship Awards.

The LAAA All-American honor will be awarded annually to recognize the best players at their respective positions from their high school season. Head Coaches nominate student athletes with high athletic, academic, and spiritual integrity.

The LAAA Team Ethics & Sportsmanship honor is based on the accumulation of red and yellow cards throughout the season on a team basis.
