Texas Private and Parochial Schoolers on 2021 FBS Football Rosters

The Lone Star Christian Sports Network (LSCSN) has canvassed the rosters of all 130 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools and has produced a list of all Texas private and parochial high school football players on them.

All but four -- Air Force, Nevada, San Diego State and Florida Atlantic - have updated listed their 2021 rosters, although 13 still show as a Spring roster.

Athletes are broken out by school in alphabetical order and then within the team in numerical order.

We took a bit of liberty and included Peyton Powell, even though he played his senior season at Odessa Permian after a pair of Midland Christian School.

The former MCS back transferred from Texas to Rutgers.

We also include Dallas Jesuit College Preparatory and Houston Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, even though these schools are members of the University Interscholastic League.

Currently, this list contains 162 athletes.  RS equals redshirt.  Players with uniform numbers of "XX" haven't been assigned a jersey as of Tuesday, July 20, 2021.

Any errors or omissions are unintentional.

Please send a private message and we'll research and correct the error.

We can only list what is on the published roster, even though somebody may still be in the program.

And while it is possible to research all 130 schools on your own and is in the "public domain", please don't cut and paste the entire list to another site.  Thank you.

LPI's Araujo Captures Gold In State Meet; 11/16/1980

DALLAS -- Freddy Araujo of El Paso Lydia Patterson Institute was just unstoppable here Saturday morning.

The Lion runner sped his way to a new course record of 15:42 in winning the gold medal at the TCIL State Cross Country Championships.

His determined running and teammate Jose Carlos Ponce's fourth-place finish (15:37) enabled Lydia Patterson to take second in the team race with 60 points.  Houston Strake Jesuit used group running to grab the state crown with 29 points.

"They (LPI) handled themselves beautfiully, considering we didn't know the course that well and the weather (around 45 degrees, windy and cloudy)," LPI Coach Juan Contreras said.

The Lions, making their first appearance at this state level, backed their effort with Roberto Sullivan (14th, 16:27), Ernesto Hernandez (20th, 16:50) and Manuel Portugal (21st, 16:56).

LPI had to overcome not being familiar with the grassy, hilly course because "we walked the course Friday but it was hard to tell which way the course was going to go."

Contreras added, "I'm quite proud of Freddy.  George Bean (of Strake Jesuit, owns a 1:50.0 best in the 880) gave him a pretty good run.  But Freddy hung in there and beat him out.

"Midway through the course there was a steep hill, that was the toughest part."

Bean went on to finish eighth while Neto Cardenas of Corpus Christi took second in 15:25.

The Lions, therefore, made a rags-to-riches climb after winning their district championship over El Paso Cathedral on Nov. 3.

TEAM SCORING -- 1.  Houston Strake Jesuit 29, 2.  El Paso Lydia Patterson 60, 3.  Dallas Bishop Lynch 124, 4.  Houston St. Thomas 124.  11 schools competing.

Tyler, Jesuit Down Irish 16-0; 11/28/1976

By Flip Moran
Times Sports Writer

All-state two-way starter Greg Tyler did not prove to be Santa Claus Saturday, as the Houston Strake Jesuit back intercepted four passes and rushed for 126 yards as the Crusaders won the Texas Catholic Football Championship 16-0 over El Paso Cathedral in Christmas weather.

It was a first for both teams -- Cathedral had never been involved in, or hosted a Texas Catholic Interscholastic League showdown, and Strake Jesuit hadn't played in one -- and it was the first title victory for the Southeast Texans in 15 years as a parochial school.

"It was really super, the people here in El Paso really treated us good," Houston Coach Tom Nolen said after the win.  "Only I wish you could have given us better weather."

The temperatures dipped to around 24 degrees in the last half of play and the winds whipped up snow, confetti, cardboard boxes that had held balloons released before the game, plus a few cross words.

Perhaps the key to the Strake Jesuit win was early in the third period when with only two minutes elapsed, halfback George Molinar of Cathedral rolled to his right and the ball slipped away.  Houston linebacker Cliff McAdams pounced on the ball -- his first of two key recoveries in the first half -- and shortly afterward backup quarterback Patrick Devine of the Crusaders booted a 16-yard field goal.

Tyler put the Houston team ahead with a 25-yard touchdown sprint in the second period with Devine kicking the point-after, and the Crusaders enjoyed a 10-0 halftime lead.

"I think we tried to play catch-up ball after that," Cathedral Coach Tom Stokes said.  "The weather wa really getting bad then, everything we did didn't seem to jell."

Cathedral quarterback Jaime Portillo tried 11 passes, had four pilfered by Tyler and only completed three for 10 yards.  It was a key factor.

Moving around on the Jones Stadium field was a task to the backs, chainman, referees and the Riverside Varsity Band which played the National Anthem; then when snow drove them into shelter, hummed "So Long It's Been Good To Know You" as they headed for the exits.  The field looked like it had a severe case of chicken pox after one period, looked like WWI with shell poxes soon afterward, and then like Walt Disney was going to produce Winter Fantasia as visibility was nil, the press box windows frosted up and uniformed players became a mass of mud and sweat.

The only things missing were the Minnesota Vikings or the Montreal Canadiens hockey team.

Tyler returned in the third period with a 25-yard TD play to put the Houston ice on the championship campaign.  The pass play was complete from Evans to tight end Trey Stake, but a penalty on Houston nullified it.  Another play fell dead.

"That wind in the third quarter was tricky, and it hurt us," Stokes said.  "We were trying to catch up; Two of Portillo's passes looked good until the wind blew them crazy.  The ball suddenly dropped and when Bruce Flynn maneuvered to try and get under them he was called for pass interference, bumping a defender."

Cathedral drew five penalties for a total of 30 yards.  Houston was tagged for six for 40.  The slippery and frozen football was dropped six times by Cathedral and they gave up two to Houston while the Crusaders let it slither away six times and couldn't recover three.

Cathedral's usually fierce defensive team just couldn't cope with the elements.  Coach Stokes admitted they were all ready up on what Houston would try and do, but when they tried to stunt, players lost their footing and players like Tyler (16 carries for 126 yards), Keith Smith, 190 pounds and 5-9 (22 carries for 72 yards) plus quarterback Devine (seven carries for 47 yards) kept plugging away through the line with good blocking.

"But of course the best team won," Strokes said.  "The snow was the same factor for both of us.  We just couldn't pass or run."

Molinar was the top man for Cathedral, he could only muster 32 yards rushing on nine carries.  Andy Reyes added 18 but some losses took away from that total in other areas.

After Houston kicked off for the first play of the game, and it cleared the heads of Cathedral players and rolled into the end zone, it seemed to tell some what was going to transpire.  Snow fell after four minutes of play.

"Do you know this is the first game we've ever played in snow," a happy spotter for Houston shouted in the press box.  "I can't wait to get out of here," he added, as if so say, "Let's take the money and run."

Things looked good for Cathedral in the third period with 10:26 left to play.  With the Norther to his back, Irish quarterback Jaime Portillo punted 65 yards and the ball was downed by Bruce Flynn on the two-yard line of Houston.  But on the next play nobody seemed to notice a white-clad figure who slipped through the line and raced 55 yards before Cathedral linebacker Jay Reyes caught Houston quarterback Devine on a sneak play, only his fourth of seven rushes for the game.  "That really hurt us," Stokes admitted.  "We thought we could hold them there, with the wind in their face, and maybe take over."

Shortly afterward with first and goal to go, John Stiggers, Rayas, Reyes and Bill Quinn played heads-up defense and held the Crusaders.  With 5:43 left in the third Evans faked a field goal but didn't fool Nick Costanzo who sacked the Crusader and jarred the ball loose and the Irish recovered.  Houston came right back to block a Portillo punt several plays later to equalize things.

St. Anthony Nips St. Ed's, 5 to 4; 5/21/1953

SAN ANTONIO, May 20 (SC) -- St. Anthony's squeezed past St. Edward's igh, 5-4, in a 13-inning thriller here Wednesday to cop the Southwest Academic League baseball co-championship.

Deadlocked at 4-4 going into the bottom of the thirteenth, St. Ed's pitcher Ruben Alvarez began to tire and walked the first three St. Anthony batters.  George Dermody then came on, struct out the first man, forced the next to pop out, and worked the third to a 3-2 count with two out before he walked him forcing in the winning run.

Each team scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth and each two in the sixth.

Alvarez went the first 12 innings for the Tigers, before Dermody came on in relief.  Dermody figured in all the crucial scoring, besides that thirteenth inning tally.  His single drove in two runs in the top of the sixth to give the Edsmen a 4-2 lead, but his error in right field allowed St. Anthony's to tie it up in the bottom of the sixth.

Joe Molina, with two for three, and Richard Alvarez, with two for four, were the Tigers' leading batsmen.

SAL Tournament Halted by Rain; 5/17/1953

Rain forced cancellation of the state Southwest Academic League baseball tournament slated for Austin Friday and Saturday and plans were made to determine co-champions.

St. Edward's will meet St. Anthony's of San Antonio for the championship of District 1 and District 2 while Sacred Heart of Muenster will face Boys Ranch of Bedford for the north zone title.

The winners of the playoff will then be crowned co-champions of the state.  St. Edward's, which won the District 2 title, will tangle with St. Anthony's Wednesday in the Alamo City while the north zone championship is due to be decided on Wednesday also.

SAL Openers Carded Today; 5/16/1953

Like many other Austin sports events, the first annual state baseball tournament of the Southwest Academic League had to play second fiddle to a burst of rain Friday.

The tournament, which was to have opened with two first round games Friday afternoon, has been moved back to 1 p.m. Saturday -- if the weather cooperates sufficiently to dry out St. Edward's and Concordia diamonds, which will be used for first round competition.

Saturday's schedule calls for one clash between St. Edward's and Sacred Heart (Muenster) at St. Edward's.  St. Anthony (San Antonio) and Boys Ranch (Bedford) are matched in the tussle at Concordia.

Initial tournament plans called for losers of first round games to meet at 6 p.m. at the same site.  Weather conditions may determine whether the Saturday night games are played, however.

St. Edward's is champion of District 1 of the SAL.  The Tigers have a 12-3 season record, the same as Boys Ranch, which is District 3 winner.  St. Anthony, District 2 champ, is 10-4 and Muenster, District 3 runnerup, won 11 of 15.

TSD Rangers To Meet Sacred Heart Eleven; 11/14/1958

The Texas School for the Deaf Rangers meet sacred Hart of Hallettsville Saturday at 2 p.m. at TSD field in the game that will decide the southern zone championship of the Southwest Academic League.

The Rangers are the defending champs and, despite their 3-1 record to 4-0 for Sacred Heart, will be the popular favorite to regain their title.

Coach Raymond Butler's team has struggled with injuries and the loss of four starters because of disciplinary reasons and still has come up with an exceptional single wing outfit.

The only TSD conference loss came at the hands of St. Mary's of Taylor.  But Sacred Heart and St. Edward's both bounced St. Mary's to send the Taylor school out of the race.

Butler's single wing is built around 195-pound fullback Jerry Smith, a three-year letterman whose running ability has earned him a place among the TSD backfield greats.  Smith's bull-like running was virtually unstoppable for St. Edward's and San Marcos.

The Ranger line is made up of the usual combination of seasoned veterans and tough freshman and sophomores.  Among the stalwarts is 233-pound junior tackle Edwin Easley.

The Rangers have won six, lost two and tied one.  The losses came at the hands of St. Mary's and Shiner and the tie was with Texas Military Institute.

The Deaf School will celebrate homecoming Saturday.  Kickoff in the championship game is set for 2 p.m.

The winner of the game will meet Catholic High of Waco, the team that has already sewed up the north zone of the Southwest Academic League.  Last year TSD lost to Laneri of Fort Worth in the playoffs.

Dallas team takes TCIL state title; 11/08/1998

By Paul MacKinnon
Special to the Times

It was deja vu all over again, all over again.  Ben Black led a pack of his Dallas teammates to the wire as Jesuit College Preparatory School won its third straight Texas Christian Interscholastic League cross country championship Saturday morning at the Socorro Student Activities Complex.

The senior, who finished fourth in last year's state meet, covered the hilly, sandy, 5-kiolmeter course in a time of 18 minutes, 2 seconds, best in the 28-runner field.  Only Strake Jesuit's Brian Bravo (second pace, 18:18) clashed wih the green and gold team colors of Black and company at the finish line.  Mike Karlseng (third, 18:27), Tony Corona (fourth, 18:28) and Rusty Meyer (fifth, 18:34) came across in a pack followed by David Steart (eighth, 18:41) as Dallas totaled a team-low of 21 points.

Cathedral sophomore Rufus Brijalva (18:39) and teammate Luis Rodriguez (18:39) slipped in between the Jesuits, finishing sixth and seventh.  As a team, the Irish took runner-up honors, scoring 49 points.

"The kids were pretty excited, they were fired up about the course," Dallas Coach Steve Koch said.  "They've never run a course like this will all the sand, the dirt and the hills."

For a guy who had never run Socorro's brand of course, Black, who has the top grade point average in his graduating class, felt right at home in the dirt.

"I don't pick my feet up a whole lot when I run," Black said.  "so, the sand didn't hurt me in that respect."

Dallas Jesuit was certainly competition-tough coming into Saturday's meet, facing the likes of Arlington High, Arlington Lamar and Flower Mound Marcus, some of the state's top public schools in cross country.

"They were ranked seventh in the entire state last year," Cathedral coach Joe Castillo said of Jesuit College Prep, "and they have most of their runners back.  Anytimewe can beat a Dallas Jesuit or a Strake, that says a lot about our program."

Dan Linton (ninth), Miguel Tapia (11th) and Dave Barron (16th) complemented Brijalva's career run as Cathedral held off Strake (70 points) for second.

"I wanted to win so much today," Brijalva said.  "I wouldn't give up.  I just hung in there."

Houston St. Thomas finished fourth with 91 points.

Team
1.  Dallas Jesuit College Prep 21
2.  El Paso Cathedral 49

TSD wins 3rd national football title; 1/15/1987

By George Breazeale
American-Statesman Staff

Texas School for the Deaf, which won 10 consecutive games before losing in the Texas Association of Private Schools 1986 state semifinals, has won its third national championship for deaf high schools, Coach Walt Camenisch announced Wednesday.

The Rangers, 10-0 in regular season, also placed two players on the All-America deaf school first team.  Mark Valimont, a 165-pound junior offensive guard, and Roger Navejar, a 160-pound senior defensive back, were first team selections; Brian Thorn, a 155-pound senior running back-linebacker, and Aaron Trotter, a 160-pound senior quarterback, received honorable mention.  Thorn was a TAPS first team all-stater on both offense and defense, and Navejar made all-state as a defensive back.

Although the national crown is TSD's first in three decades, Valimont and Navejar continued a string of All-America players at the school.  Lineman Mitchell Stock wa a 1985 first-team pick, and running back Leftly Lincoln was a first-teamer in 1983 and 1984.

TSD's 1986 team averaged 45.3 points per game during the regular season while allowing only 9.8 per game.  The Rangers were 3-0 in TAPS District 5 play.

"We're tremendously proud of this team," said Camenisch, who took over the TSD program in 1983.  "The other two national champions here at TSD, in 1947 and 1957, are legends, and it is a thrill to the players on our 1986 team to join them."

TSD was selected from among 24 deaf school teams whose 1986 season records were submitted to the National Deaf School Association.  Alabama School for the Deaf (7-1) was ranked second; Model School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. (8-1-1) was third.

The national title was TSD's third in four years.  Ranger boys track and field teams were awarded national crowns in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

TSD Star Sammy Oates Named To Participate in 'Olympic Games'; 10/21/1956

One of Austin's most highly publicized athletes for two years now, Texas School for the Deaf senior Sammy Oates has been named to participate in the International Olympic Games for the Deaf to be held in Rome, Aug. 25-30, 1957.

The announcement was made by the United States International Games for the Deaf Committee and the 17-year-old Oates will be one of 25 or 26 boys who will make the journey to Italy.

A three-sports star at the south Austin school, Oates will definitely enter the shot put where he expects to be a 50-foot putter by Olympics time with the 12-pound ball -- and the broad jump.  He also may be used as a javelin thrower and diver.

At TSD Oates has twice been named to the All-America Deaf School football team and has led his team to successive highly successful grid seasons.  At present the Rangers are undefeated and rated near the top in the Southwest Academic League of which TSD is a member.

Like the Olympic Games set for Melbourne, Australia, this year, the Deaf Olympics will be supported by public subscription.  The Games Committee must raise $25,000 before the team can be sent to Rome.  Any Austinite or Centexan wishing to donate can do so by contacting Raymond Butler at the Texas School for the Deaf.

Texas Silents Score 13-0 Win Over Arkansas; 11/03/1940

Brown, Matthiesen Shine For Locals As Musteen Paces Foes

By Wilbur Martin

Robert Brown, the Texas Silents' two-time All-American Deaf School back, sparked his mates to a 13-0 victory over the Arkansas School for Deaf Saturday night on the House Park gridiron.

Striking late in the first quarter, the Silents started their touchdown drive when Matthiesen went 31 yards around his left end down to the Arkansas 10-yard line.  Brown took the ball over on a plunge through right tackle.  The try for extra point failed.

Larren Musteen, Arkansas Deaf School All-America back, kept his team a constant threat with his fine running and quick-kicks.

In the second quarter Arkansas began a march toward the Silents' goal, but lost the ball on downs.

Matthiessen again set the stage for the Silents' second touchdown.  This time he took the ball on a 39-yard jaunt to the Arkansas 26-yard line.  Brown picked up 26 yard on the next play, and with the ball on the one-yard line, plunged over for the score.  Matthiesen went over for the extra point.

From her on out it was Musteen for Arkansas against Brown of the Silents.  The Arkansas back started a drive toward the Silents' goal but fumbles kept him from going farther than the Silents' 43-yard line.

The Silents, late in the fourth quarter, marched down the field but penalties set them back time after time.  With two minutes left to play in the game, the Silents were again on their way for a score, the final gun sounding just as the Silents had the ball on the Arkansas 10-yard line.

All-America Deaf Stars to Duel Here Saturday in Tiff for Southern Title; 10/30/1940

For the southern championship, football teams of the Texas and Arkansas Schools for Deaf will clash at House Park Saturday night.

Headed by a tricky broken-field runner named Larren "Little Pizen" Musteen, All-America Deaf School halfback two years straight, the Arkansas team will be a slight favorite to repeat its '39 victory over Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

It will be homecoming day for ex-students of the Texas School for Deaf and a large crowd of out-of-town people is expected.  Among the guests will be the superintendent of the Arkansas School for Deak and about 20 faculty members, and the superintendent of the Mississippi School for Deaf.

Clyde White's Texas Silents have won two games, lost two and tied two this season, a better record to date than was anticipated because of the strenuous schedule.  Defeats were administered by the strong Wink and Conroe High School teams.

Arkansas has lost only one game, that one last week to Wayne High School of Arkansas.  A. L. Smith, vocational principal at the local deaf school and a well known Texas football official, saw the Wayne game.  He reported that Wayne had a team comparable to Austin high's, and added the Musteen was the finest ball-carrier he had seen in 19 years of observing football.

Texas will try to match Musteen with an All-America star of a different type -- Big Bob Brown, 220-pound tailback who plays in the line on defense.  Brown mad the '38 All-America deaf team at tackle and last year's as a back.

It will be the big game of the year for Texas Deaf and one that has been dedicated to the alumni.
