Houston The Kinkaid School alum Raevyn Rogers is headed to the Olympics in Tokyo after finishing second Sunday night in the 800 meters at the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Running a personal best time of 1:57.66, Rogers was sixth in the backstretch on the second lap, moved to fifth on the curve and then sprinted to the outside in Lane 2 to capture the runner-up spot behind Aggie sensation Athing Mu.

+ Former Addison Trinity Christian and University of Texas golfer Kramer Hickok battled threw an epic eight-hole playoff before losing by a stroke to Harris English at The Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.  Hickok, a teammate of Dallas Jesuit great Jordan Speith at Texas, hit his second shot 28 feet from the pin and two-putted while English landed his approach 12 feet closer and birdied.

It was Hickok's best finish on the PGA Tour, bettering a tie for eighth at the 2018 Bermuda Championship - his only other time in a top 10.  The eight-hole playoff was a record for the event, bypassing seven-hole playoffs in 1961 and 1962.  The longest playoff in PGA history, 11 holes, was in 1949 at the Motor City Open.

+ Three private and parochial school golfers competed at the AJGA Junior at Oldfield in Okatie, South Carolina this week.  The Woodlands Christian Academy senior Ethan Bridges shot five over par 221 to finish tied for 15th while Warriors teammate Jake Maggert, a junior, was five strokes back at 226.  Fort Worth Trinity Valley School sophomore Sam Bumgardner was tied for 33rd with a score of 232.

+ Former Dallas Bishop Lynch great and 2019 Texas Gatorade Player of the Year Endyia Rogers announced via Twitter Sunday afternoon that she had committed to the University of Oregon after a pair of seasons with the Trojans of the University of Southern California.

She played in and started all of USC's 54 games her two years finishing second on the team in scoring her freshman year with 13.1 ppg - on the strength of a team-high 44 three pointers - and leading the team her sophomore year with 14.8 ppg and another team-high 35 three balls.

+ The Woodlands John Cooper School sophomore Mahi Khurana finished second in the Boys 16s Singles divison of the USTA Texas The Texas Slam tournament in Georgetown from June 19-26.  Khurana lost to Noey Do in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.  Before that he entered the tournament seeded 15th, but won six straight matches, losing only one set along the way, to reach the finals against Do.

+ Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal alum and University of Central Arkansas sophomore IF A.J. Mendolia as well as Beaumont Kelly grad and Lamar University freshman outfielder Owen Sheldon were named to the Sunflower Collegiate League East All-Star Team that will play in the SCL Evergy All-Star Game on Monday, July 5, 2021.  Mendolia, who's batting .324 in 20 games, plays for the Wichita Sluggers while Sheldon, who's a member of the Sunflower Seeds, is hitting .308 in 14 contests.

LSCSN News and Notes; June 20, 2021

Happy Father's Day to all of Texas private and parochial high school Dads out there!

From the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Oregon, Houston Strake Jesuit alum Frank Lara was second through 5,600 meters of Friday night's 10,000 meters, but ended up finishing 18th in 28:45.41 in an incredibly tough field.

Fellow Houston Strake Jesuit alum Matthew Boling ran 10.13 in the first round of the 100 meters to qualify for Sunday's semifinal at 8:19 p.m. Pacific time.

+  We probably missed this being announced earlier, but the following athletes and coaches were recently recognized by the Texas Track & Field Coaches Association (TTFCA).  They included:

Private School Track:  Autumn Wilson (Austin St. Dominic Savio) & Ben Shearer (The Woodlands Christian Academy)
Private School Field:  Faith Mitchell (Houston St. Agnes) & Augustus Henry (Marble Falls Faith Academy)
Private School Coaches:  Kristi Robbins (Houston St. Agnes) & Marsha Martin (Cypress Christian)

This is the fifth straight year that the TTFCA has recognized private and parochial school athletes and coaches.  Thank you!

+ We see a lot of summer baseball activity for a lot of Texas private and parochial high school baseball players in our Twitter feed.  While we'd love to recap a lot of that activity, our biggest fear is that we'd miss somebody.  Please make sure you follow @PSTxHSBaseball for a lot of this activity.

+ At the Sam Brown state qualifying tournament at Grand Oaks High School for the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament coming up next weekend, Houston Strake Jesuit went 2-0 in pool play with wins over Fort Bend Clements, 28-8, and Goose Creek Memorial, 38-24, but lost by two in bracket play to Cy-Fair, 28-26.  Bellaire Episcopal is competing in a qualifier on Sunday at the same location.

+ On Thursday, Dave Campbell's Texas Football's managing editor Greg Tepper named Fort Worth Nolan's David Beaudin and Shiner St. Paul's Jake Wachsmuth as two of his 10 most underrated Texas High School Football Coaches.

+ In Texas Basketball Championships' Summer State Basketball Tournament in Grapevine, the following Texas private and parochial high school programs competed:

In the 3A division, Fort Worth Country Day School went 1-2 in pool play, beat Nocona by one (44-43) before losing to Hemphill by three (39-36) and getting routed by Callisburg.  In bracket play Saturday evening, Abernathy beat Country Day, 48-34, and the Falcons will face Callisburg again today in the consolation round.

In the 4A division, Denton Liberty Christian ties for first with two other teams in pool play at 2-1, getting a 48-46 win over Anna and a 38-36 victory over Lake Worth before dropping a big decision to Waxahachie Life, 41-25.  In bracket play Saturday night, Liberty Christian dropped a one-point decision to Robinson, 53-52, and draws Bridgeport in consolation action on Sunday.

In the 5A/6A division, Midland Christian split their four games in pool play with losses to Grapevine (63-58) and Coppell (58-41) before posting wins over Wichita Falls Rider (44-31) and Mansfield Summit (72-70).  The latter was a four-overtime classic.  In the opening round of bracket play, Midland Christian fell 42-32 to Denton Braswell and will play Wichita Falls Rider today in consolation round play.

LSCSN News and Notes; June 17, 2021

Dallas Jesuit alum KYLE MULLER became the third Texas private and parochial high school athlete to make their MLB debut in the last two weeks when he got an inning of work for the Atlanta Braves in their 10-8 loss Wednesday night at Fenway Park to the Boston Red Sox.  Muller faced seven batters, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out one.

Three pitchers later for the Braves, former Bullard Brook Hill alum AJ MINTER was tagged with a blown save for the Braves after giving up a pinch-hit grand slam to Christian Arroyo.

+  Former Rice Owl and Tomball Concordia Lutheran alum GLENN OTTO pushed his record to 3-2 on the young MILB season on the strength of a 14-strikeout, seven-inning effort as the Somerset Patriots defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 10-1, on Tuesday night.  He said in the piece below on MILB.com, "“I’m just trying to execute every pitch I can.  We work hard in between starts so that it’s easier on me to just go out and attack and execute each pitch.”

For the entire game story, including a video of Otto, click here.

+  Entries were announced for Brooks' PR Invitational in Seattle, Washington on Friday, July 2nd and they include three private and parochial high school athletes.  Arkansas bound and The Woodlands Christian Academy great BEN SHEARER will be competing in the mile while Austin St. Dominic Savio athletes AUTUMN WILSON and HALI MURPHY will race in the 100 meters and 400 meters, respectively.

+  Former San Anotnio TMI-Episcopal Panther PATO O'WARD won the Detroit Grand Prix Race No. 2 on Sunday, June 13 at Belle Isle, Michigan.  In doing so, he became the first repeat winner of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season and won by nearly seven seconds over Team Penske's Josef Newgarden
