Kirwin Football Prospects Good For First Year (9/3/1928)

Kirwin High's prospects for a first year football eleven are as bright as could be expected, according to Marvin Kennedy, former Ball coach, who has undertaken to mentor the Catholic High School players in their first year on the gridiron.

Twenty boys have reported for practice who look big enough to stand the grind of a football season and if the team is fortunate enough to escape injuries it should give an excellent account of itself against all opponents.

With three practice sessions behind them the boys will start on a strenuous week this afternoon.

Workouts are scheduled at the Kirwin High grounds every afternoon at 5 o'clock and Kennedy plans to bear down, but the boys are responding readily and are going about the labor of becoming pigskin carriers with creditable determination.

No captain has yet been chosen nor has a name for the team been selected other than Kirwin High.  These details will be taken care of before the first game Sunday, Sept. 30, with the Little Hurricanes.

Many open dates remain on the Kirwin program and nearby schools desiring classes are asked to get in touch with Coach Kennedy.

Laneri is the proud holder of its first Southwest Academic League football title Saturday, after roaring from behind to down Boys Ranch, 33-26, Friday night at Bedford.

Boys Ranch took a 13-point lead, but was unable to hang on in the wild offensive flurry which highlighted the final furious minutes of play.

Lowenberg Named New Grid Coach at Fabens (El Paso Times, Sunday, July 30, 1972)

by Flip Morin

Carlos Lowenberg, known among sports circles at the coach who broke Cathedral's domination of Texas Catholic Interscholastic League football, has been named athletic director and head coach of the football and track programs at Fabens High School.

Lowenberg will be faced with assembling the gridiron shambles from a dismal 1-8-1 season into a smooth-running, hard-hitting machine in 6-AA play.

"It's going to be a different story this year," he said.  "I think Fabens will be in the race right down to the final wire," he added.

Lowenberg has been reviewing old school films and knows the material is there (17 returning letterman) but that they just weren't up mentally and physically last year.  He said he would emphasize the basic fundamentals of the game to get the players working and winning together.

The former Cathedral graduate has been at Jesuit High School of the TCIL the past three years as athletic director and head coach of the football and basketball teams plus teaching physical education.  He capped his career at Jesuit by producing near-championship TCIL football teams, earning two shots at the state title, sidelining Cathedral en route.

In 1970 Jesuit's Eagles went to San Antonio for the semifinals but lost to San Antonio Central.  Last year they whipped San Antonio St. Gerard for the right at the first El Paso TCIL title ever, but lost to a much taller and heavier St. Thomas 11.

Lowenberg's crop produced four all-staters in Luigi Perereia, Kevin Brink, Charlie Villareal and Ralph Castanzo.

At Fabens his duties will encompass th school system's athletic programs for about 1,500 students at the two primary, the junior high and varsity levels.  Fabens High counts an enrollment of more than 470.

Lowenberg indicated his staff will be super, with Steve Sanchez, former defensive football and head track coach at Cathedral joining Fabens in 1972.  Louis Sanchez, already a staffer, will remain as head basketball and assistant football coach while Don Fulps, ex-Burges athlete will coach B-team football with help from D. Joe Williams.
