FB: Jackson Set To Return To Shiner St. Paul

By Jon Walk
Lone Star Christian Sports Network

They say you can't go home again, but Dr. Mike Jackson is getting the opportunity to go back to his coaching home - just in the time for the start of the 2023 football season.

With Shiner St. Paul Catholic School athletic director Jake Wachsmuth needing to take a step back from his head football coaching responsibilities, which have included 10 trips to a TAPPS state championship game - with eight wins, the school is bringing back the architect of its first-ever state football champion from 1992.

"I am thrilled to be back in Shiner and to bring my family into the town and school that had the faith to hire a 22-year-old head coach 32 years ago," Jackson said.

Jackson, who led the Cardinals to three TAPPS state championships in the 1992-1993 school year including girls basketball and softball, will look to add to his 212-114-4 mark as a 30-year head football coach in a 32-year career in education.

His most recent stop of his seven head coaching positions - having never been an assistant - was at Conroe Grand Oaks, a program he was able to start from the ground-up and go 29-16 in five years at the UIL 6A level.

"Our plan was to retire and sit for a year, then return under the retire/rehire provision and coach my son and daughter in a small school setting; or if a private school became available to go that route this year," he said.

Jackson first won a state championship at Shiner St. Paul in 1992, defeating Dallas Tyler Street Christian, 8-6, in the TAPPS Division IV title contest, and then moved to Houston St. Pius X the following year and won the TAPPS Super 3A title, sharing it with Addison Trinity Christian after a 26-all tie.

While many coaches have won titles at two - and in some cases, three - different schools, he is believed to be one of only two to win a state title in back-to-back years with two different schools.

Chuck Curtis won state titles in 1962 and 1963 with Jacksboro and Garland, respectively.  He also added a third title in 1964 with the Owls.

And if the Cardinals are able to make it back to the TAPPS Division IV state championship game in December and avenge the loss to Lubbock Christian, Jackson could join the likes of G.A. Moore, Jr., Tim Buchanan and Jerry Burkhart, who won state championships at Celina, Aledo and Richland Springs, respectively, in two distinct stints.

He has coached at every level - Shiner St. Paul (1A), Houston St. Pius X (3A), Robstown (4A), Charlotte (2A), Houston Chavez (6A), La Marque (5A) and Conroe Grand Oaks (6A), taken four of those schools to the fourth round of the playoffs, and has been in the playoffs 21 times in his 30-year head football coaching career.

What he hasn't had the opportunity to do, though, is coach his kids in the school setting.

"We took a leap of faith and put it in God's hands, deciding to retire so early," he said.  "This move is about finding the right community and right school to raise our three children in and continue working with kids in a much more personal setting than 6A."

He will be joined in the move by his wife, Tracey, with whom he is celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary today, and children, Mariah, Jericho and Maverick, who will enter the 11th, seventh and first grades, respectively.

Mariah had a stellar sophomore season at Charlotte in 2022-2023, excelling in three sports - basketball, softball and track, and since Jackson will also once again work with some of the girls teams at Shiner St. Paul, he'll move from being her cheerleader in the stands to being involved in coaching her in practice and competition.

Jackson will report for duty with the Cardinals on Monday, July 31 for the first day of practice as they open their 53rd season of playing Texas high school football.

The Cardinals, who are still looking for a week three opponent, open on the road Friday night, August 25, against the Flatonia Bulldogs, who were 11-2 regional semifinalists last year and are the favorites in UIL District 13-2A, Division I.

1969 TCIL Football: Bishop Forest Coach Takes Yoakum Job

 By Julius Ermis

YOAKUM - Football seemed to be assured for the 1969 season at St. Joseph High School when the Rev. Michael Shaughnessy, pastor and superintendent, signed Teddy Vanek of Schulenburg to a one-year contract as head coach.

Vanek comes to Yoakum after coaching at Bishop Forest High School in Schulenburg as an assistant and head coach for the past three years.

He graduated from Bishop Forest High School in 1962 and attended Sam Houston State University where he received his degree in history as a major and a minor in P.E.

Vanek then went to serve as assistant coach at Bishop Forest in 1966 and was elevated to head coach in the fall of 1967 through the spring of 1969.

During his final two years at Bishop Forest, he was head mentor in football, basketball and track serving as assistant coach in baseball.

Coach Vanek led Bishop Forest to district titles in the Texas Catholic Interscholastic League in football, track and baseball during his stay.  In 1966 and 1968, Bishop Forest captured the 2-AA district championship in football, while losing to St. Mary's of Fredericksburg both times in the state finals.

Bishop Forest also won three consecutive track titles as well as taking the district baseball crowns three times.  In 1966 and 1969, the powerhouse at Schulenburg bowed to Corpus Christi Academy in the state finals of the TCIL baseball tournament.

At the age of 25 and single, Teddy is attending summer classes at the University of Houston and his plans include moving to Yoakum when he completes his summer semester at the U of H in the latter part of July.

1973 TCIL Baseball: Jesuit, Victoria Pace TCIL Baseball Tourney

By John Hines, Staff Writer

Dallas Jesuit in Class AAA and Victoria St. Joseph's in the Class AA division emerged in the drivers' seats as the only unbeaten teams in the TCIL State Baseball Tournament after second-day action Friday at Keefe Field and Holy Cross.

Jesuit took a 4-1 victory over Houston St. Thomas and now faces the War Eagles again for the state championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Keefe Field.  A St. Thomas victory would men another game immediately following.

St. Thomas came back to eliminate San Antonio's AAA entry, Holy Cross, with another one-run victory over the Knights, 3-2.  Holy Cross left 12 men on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth and men on first and third when the game ended.

Winning pitcher Paul Stavnoha singled in the deciding run for the War Eagles in the second after their first three batters produced two runs in the first, Luis Garcia singling, Rory Miggins tripling to the right field wall and Bill Tower hitting a sacrifice fly.

Holy Cross earlier eliminated Houston St. Pius, the team with the best record coming into the meet (24-5) and the defending AA champs, 9-4.  Eddie Hernandez homered over the left field wall in the fourth, then belted a two-run single when the Knights batted around in the fifth.  Bobby Santos allowed only four hits, three of them in the infield.

Victoria St. Joseph will meet Galveston O'Connell for the state title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Keefe, with another game following if O'Connell wins.

The Buccaneers pulled off the iron-man hat trick of three victories, in turn eliminating St. Anthony, 5-4; Laredo St. Joseph, 13-5, and Waco Reicher, 4-2.

Johnny McKenna swung the big bat for O'Connell, blasting a two-run homer and a double in the victory over Laredo, then rapping another two-bagger to break a 1-1 tie against Reicher in the seventh.  Mark Laine singled and Paul Montalbano doubled to drive in the other runs.

O'Connell had to come from behind with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a check-swing single by Mark Daulong, sacrifice bunt that was thrown away for a three-base error to let in the tying run and Randy Bolton's squeeze and third RBI.

Mark Chovanec's two singles produced three runs for Victoria St. Joe, while Mark Johnston pitched hitless ball until the fifth for Jesuit.

St. Anthony, incidentally, would have needed seven games to have won the tournament by the way the draw and results.

COMMENTARY: So Why Can't We Have Softball Rankings?

Funny you should ask about that.

Plano John Paul II varsity softball coach Jayme Baker commented late Monday evening on LSCSN’s post about the latest private and parochial high school baseball rankings from Texas High School Baseball Magazine.

She said, “Wishing we had softball rankings!!!!!”

We responded, “Honestly, it was a goal of mine for this year, but just didn't get a jump on it.

“I'd rather do it right so it would have a chance at being credible.  Biggest challenge of ranking anything in private schools is strength of schedule.”

Actually, the biggest challenge is really score reporting.

TAPPS implemented a new policy that schedules must be maintained in Rank One and scores must be reported in one or two days, depending on the sport.

Football and volleyball got the year off strong.  Fall soccer did pretty good too.

(Note:  Football has its own separate network of score tracking in Texas, which makes Rank One mostly irrelevant – except where a school is following TAPPS policy and get their scores there FIRST!)

Basketball didn’t do too bad, but past the bi-district round of the playoffs compliance fell through the floor.

And we haven’t even looked at baseball yet, but we haven’t heard our good friend Brandon Brunson with Texas Private School Baseball grumbling at all so things must be OK there.

Late here on Monday evening, I just made a run through a few sources for softball.

Again, Rank One is a requirement for TAPPS schools.

If not maintained, TAPPS can issue a warning to a school and after multiple offenses, head coaches can be suspended for a game.

Additionally, all scores must be made public.

(By the way, we appreciate Beaumont Kelly’s baseball team for making their scores public after a tweet last week.  Even more, we admire the courage of Kelly’s softball team for reporting their scores – with a mark of 0-17 to date, but their scores need to be made public too like the baseball team.)

However, there are some talented softball teams that haven’t reported a score, but you can find their results all on Max Preps.

Think about it:  Max Preps is using you and your school for clicks to sell advertising revenue.

If you’re a TAPPS member school, you’re paying for the Rank One service through your membership and sport fees – and aren’t utilizing it.

That’s a waste of your parents’ tuition dollars.

Even though it would be tempting to omit that school (or schools, if more than one) from the rankings for non-compliance, it just goes against our grain of professionalism for a team of young people that has proven itself inside the chalk lines.

Coaches need to do better.

In Max Preps, there’s 43 TAPPS schools in the rankings.

In Rank One, there’s 93 schools – including 23 who haven’t reported a single score yet this season.  17 of them are Division IV programs so maybe a few of them haven’t played yet.

Longtime (and retired) softball coach Billy Hicks, who runs the Texas Prep Softball site at txprepsoftball.net, has diligently tracked down scores for all UIL, TAPPS and SPC programs.

However, he has 99 TAPPS schools.  (And 13 SPC schools to Max Preps’ seven.)

And there are few schools with the same record between any two sources.

Lubbock Trinity Christian is 15-7 with both Billy and Rank One.  Frisco Legacy Christian is 14-5-1 in both places.

Hyde Park is 17-1 in MaxPreps.  Texas Prep Softball has them at 19-1.  Rank One?  Wow.  A whopping 26-2!

What do you think?

Want us to take a stab at it?

TAPPS Division I and II and all SPC in a Large School with any large independents, such as San Antonio Cornerstone Christian.

And then TAPPS Division III and IV in a Small School with any other leagues, such as TCAF, T-CAL, TAIAO, TCSAAL or Homeschool?

In everything LSCSN does, we want all schools, programs, league officials, coaches, and players to have the best and the brightest lights shined upon them, but sometimes we have to work on tackling some of the issues in front of us too.
