San Antonio, March 3 (AP) -- A long one-handed field goal with but threeseconds to play gave St. Joseph's Academy of Abilene a 34-32 victory over Central Catholic of San Antonio and the state Catholic basketball championship here.

Although St. Joseph's Led three quarters of the game, the score changed hands seven times and was tied three times in the final quarter.

St. Joseph's reached the finals by defeating St. Henry's Academy of San Antonio, 52 to 39, in the semifinals, while Central was eliminating St. Joseph's of Victoria, 35 to 26.

St. Henry's then won third place by defeating St. Joseph's of Victoria, 49 to 12.

St. Joseph's Academy of Abilene will compete with seven other Catholic high schools at San Antonio Friday and Saturday for the state Catholic basketball championship and the right to represent Texas in the National tournament at Chicago.

The tournament, which will probably be an annual affair, is being sponsored by St. Mary's University.

The Abilene cagers will meet St. Joseph's of Dallas in a first-round battle.  Other pairings for the round are:  Kirwin of Galveston vs. St. Henry's of San Antonio, St. Francis Xavier of Denison vs. St. Joseph's of Victoria and St. Anthony's of Beaumont vs. Central Catholic of San Antonio.
