FB: Title Sharing Ramblers Play Last At Home; 11/8/1957

Allen Academy's Ramblers, co-champions of the southern division of the Texas Private School Association, make their final home appearance of the season Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they collide with up-and-down St. Stephen's of Austin.

The Ramblers notched a sparkling 34-0 victory over Lutheran here last week to wind up conference play and win a share of the title with St. John's of Houston.  The co-champions battled to a 13-13 tie early this season, setting the stage for the two teams to share the throne room.

The Ramblers, coached by George Gillar and Bob Clendennon, two members of the 1956 Texas A&M Southwest Conference champions, will keep with their Aggie-style split T offense Saturday.  But the fans who invade Bronco Field Saturday afternoon will see a new style defense employed by the Ramblers.

Clendennon said that plans call for using a 3-3-3-2 style of defensive play.  Heretofore, the Ramblers have used variations of the five- and six-man defensive play.  Whether the Ramblers stick with their new defense will depend a lot upon the style of play used by the visitors.

Clendennon said the Blue and Gold will hold a light workout this afternoon, winding up their practice sessions for the week.  Weather has hampered most of the week's drills, but in spite of the rain the Ramblers have shown a lot of hustle and drive.

Clendennon said the starting lineup against St. Stephen's would be made up of Wayne Wallace and Mike Porter, ends; Guy Hendrix and Jerry Wendt, tackles; Mike Dixon and Garry Morris, guards; Walter Britain, quarterback, David Erwin and either Lynn Bean or Jesse Briggs, halfbacks and Julius Bright, fullback.
