SAL Openers Carded Today; 5/16/1953

Like many other Austin sports events, the first annual state baseball tournament of the Southwest Academic League had to play second fiddle to a burst of rain Friday.

The tournament, which was to have opened with two first round games Friday afternoon, has been moved back to 1 p.m. Saturday -- if the weather cooperates sufficiently to dry out St. Edward's and Concordia diamonds, which will be used for first round competition.

Saturday's schedule calls for one clash between St. Edward's and Sacred Heart (Muenster) at St. Edward's.  St. Anthony (San Antonio) and Boys Ranch (Bedford) are matched in the tussle at Concordia.

Initial tournament plans called for losers of first round games to meet at 6 p.m. at the same site.  Weather conditions may determine whether the Saturday night games are played, however.

St. Edward's is champion of District 1 of the SAL.  The Tigers have a 12-3 season record, the same as Boys Ranch, which is District 3 winner.  St. Anthony, District 2 champ, is 10-4 and Muenster, District 3 runnerup, won 11 of 15.
