St. Anthony Nips St. Ed's, 5 to 4; 5/21/1953

SAN ANTONIO, May 20 (SC) -- St. Anthony's squeezed past St. Edward's igh, 5-4, in a 13-inning thriller here Wednesday to cop the Southwest Academic League baseball co-championship.

Deadlocked at 4-4 going into the bottom of the thirteenth, St. Ed's pitcher Ruben Alvarez began to tire and walked the first three St. Anthony batters.  George Dermody then came on, struct out the first man, forced the next to pop out, and worked the third to a 3-2 count with two out before he walked him forcing in the winning run.

Each team scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth and each two in the sixth.

Alvarez went the first 12 innings for the Tigers, before Dermody came on in relief.  Dermody figured in all the crucial scoring, besides that thirteenth inning tally.  His single drove in two runs in the top of the sixth to give the Edsmen a 4-2 lead, but his error in right field allowed St. Anthony's to tie it up in the bottom of the sixth.

Joe Molina, with two for three, and Richard Alvarez, with two for four, were the Tigers' leading batsmen.
