St. Mary's To Sponsor Loop - State Catholic Schools To Be Eligible; 11/27/1934

By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 26 -- St. Mary's University of San Antonio announced plans for a state interscholastic athletic league for Catholic high schools this week.  Mose Simms will make a tour of the cities in which eligible schools are located next week, according to Rev. Bro. Leo J. Banck, S. M., chairman of the faculty committee of athletics.

Present plans call for dividing the state into regions in which several teams will play each other, the winners to play the victors in other regions.  A championship game between the North and South Texas champs would then be played on Thanksgiving Day and a post-season game between the winners and the winners of the tournament among the other high schools would determine the state champion.

Catholic high schools which have been contacted so far include:  Laneri High of Fort Worth, St. Thomas of Houston, Kirwin Memorial of Galveston, St. Joseph of Dallas, Central Catholic, St. Gerard's, St. Henry's and St. Anthony's of San Antonio, Corpus Christi College Academy, St. Edward's University Preparatory School, St. Joseph's of Brownsville, St. Mary's University at La Porte and St. Joseph's Academy of Abilene.

Schedules, eligibility rules and other details will be worked out by St. Mary's University authorities and silver trophies will be presented to the winners in each district.

It is hoped that plans will be completed in time to hold a basketball tournament this winter, the winner to go to the Chicago catholic tournament.  Track and field events and basketball could be arranged for this spring so that by next fall a good football schedule would be worked out.
