While seven points separated Houston St. Thomas and Fulshear in the boys varsity race of Saturday's 12th annual IWA Invitational at Houston's Willow Waterhole Greenway, it was a classic man to man matchup won by the Eagles of St. Thomas.

No more than three spots came between each of the five runners from the two schools in scoring positions.

That's how close things were.

Houston St. Thomas senior Brent Koehn, who was 10th overall at the 2020 TAPPS 6A state meet last fall, was the overall winner over 3,200 meters in 10:15, putting two seconds on a pair of Houston Homeschool Athletics athletes -- junior Luke Booker and senior Issac Pendley -- to take the top spot.

Fulshear had a pair of runners go seventh and eighth after Koehn had put the Eagles up by three and between sophomore Benjamin Lauzon's fifth place overall finish of 10:29 and '24 classmate Luis Sanchez's ninth place standing of 11:02 Fulshear had only cut the margin by one.

Junior Patrick Bourg would beat Fulshear's next run by one spot and just two seconds for the 16th spot before sophomore Pablo Ramirez and senior Mark Cheek teamed up to seal the deal with a two- and one-spot edge in 24th and 25th places with an equal time of 11:45 that was just one second ahead of the Chargers last scoring runner.

The Woodlands Christian Academy also put a pair in the top ten as junior Zach Bagnoli was sixth overall in 10:39 and senior William Bennett was tenth stopping the clock in 11:04.

Runners from fifteen different schools, including Houston Homeschool Athletics who outpointed TWCA by 11 points for third, competed with ten fielding at least five to score as a team.

Sugar Land Logos Preparatory's Cody Hogan was the top freshman of the meet with a two-mile time of 11:18, good for 15th overall.
