LSCSN News and Notes; June 22, 2021

Dallas Jesuit alum Kyle Muller got his first MLB start (in his second appearance) for the Atlanta Braves on Monday at New York's Citi Field as he went four innings and gave up two walks, a hit and an earned run to take the loss in Atlanta's 4-2 loss to the Mets.

+  Texas Rangers catcher and Corpus Christi John Paul II alum Jose Trevino went deep for the third time on the year for Texas as the Rangers defeated the Oakland Athletics, 8-3, Monday night at Globe Life Park.

Driving his average up to .230, Trevino went two-for-four and drove in three runs - all on the two-out, three-run dinger that drove Frankie Montas from the game.  And the dinger certainly made up for Trevino getting caught stealing and his fifth throwing error of the year.

+  Houston The Kinkaid School alumna Raevyn Rogers will be competing in the 800-meter dash at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday, when the prelims will be held.  The semifinals will be on Friday and Olympic spots will be handed out on Sunday.

She was fifth at the 2016 Olympic Trials in Eugene with a time of 2:00.59.  Her PR in the distance is 1:57.69 set in Monaco in 2018 and she was second two years ago in the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar in 1:58.18.

+  Bellaire Episcopal alum Tanner Witt of the Texas Longhorns was named to the Perfect Game Freshman All-America team on Monday.  Witt, a first-team selection, has a team-high 26 appearances this season with a 3.06 ERA in 50 innings pitched the season, striking out 71 batters and giving up just 22 walks while holding opponents to a .199 batting average against.

He was joined on the first team by TCU right-hander River Ridings, who is an alum of Plano Prestonwood Christian Academy.  Ridings was 3-2 with one save and a 1.08 ERA for the Horned Frogs this past season.

+  Former Fort Worth Nolan head baseball coach Art Senato was named on Monday, June 21 as the new head baseball coach at Burleson Centennial High School.  He will take a 468-291-3 record to Burleson Centennial with 25 years as a head coach and 29 years of overall coaching experience.

Senato was 109-47 in five years at Nolan from 1998 to 2002.  He left the Vikings for Arlington Bowie after guiding Nolan to two district titles, five trips to the semifinals and two losses in state championship games, earning the Star-Telegram's Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000.

+  The Dallas Morning News' Greg Riddle reported on Monday that Dallas First Baptist Academy boys varsity head basketball coach Dez Willingham will be leaving the school after four years leading the Saints to become the new boys basketball coach at Dallas Skyline.

This coincides with the move that First Baptist Academy announced on Friday, June 18 that they had hired Guy DeAngelis for Willingham's vacated role.  DeAngelis brings AD and head basketball coaching experience from his high school alma mater, Mekeel Christian Academy in Scotia, New York.  He played one season collegiately at Lancaster Bible College in the 2006-07 season.

+  Cornell University announced on Monday that Fort Worth Nolan Catholic QB Jimmy Taylor joined the class of 2025.  He is there with Bellaire Episcopal DB Miles Jones (6'1", 175) and Houston The Kinkaid School's DL Ezekiel Evans (6'3", 265).  Taylor is 6'3", 228 and is attending his father's alma mater, where Jeffrey was part of Cornell's 1990 Ivy League championship team.

+  Lubbock Christian High School's Abbie Crow drained six three-pointers to be named the MVP of Sunday's 806 High School Sports Connection girls All-Star basketball Game, which earned her a $500 scholarship, according to @LCHSEagles.

Not to be outdone, Lubbock Trinity Christian's Tucker Smothermon was the MVP of the boys' contest.  He scored 28 points, and like Crow, he earned a $500 scholarship from Zaire Smith, the former Red Raider roundballer.

+  In Wichita Falls on Saturday, Wichita Christian School's Madison Harris competed in the Oil Bowl All-Star big-school volleyball contest, finishing with a match-high 15 assists, never leaving the floor and feeding Decatur's Kenedy Houchin and Wichita Falls Hirschi's Kiya Hedge, according to Wichita Falls Times Record News sportswriter Jonathan Hull.  She said in the story that "it meant a lot to me when the coach of the biggest high school in this town let me run the court."

+  Three private and parochial high school athletes have been chosen to be a part of the Greater Houston Baseball Coaches Association 2021 Senior All-Star Game.  They include Tomball Concordia Lutheran's Jaxon Daigre (Blinn College) and Houston Lutheran South Academy's Christian Melillo (Southwestern University) and Nelson Klein (Benedictine College).

The game will be contested tonight in Deer Park.

+  El Paso Cathedral defensive backs coach Darius Brown was presented the 2021 Black Community Hero of the Borderland award by the El Paso Chihuahuas baseball team Saturday night in partnership with El Paso Young Black Leaders.

EPYBL's mission is to connect and engage El Paso's young professionals in the Black community and beyond through personal and professional development experiences.

Brown said, "Super cool to be recognized, but the work and the effort belongs to many people that don't have their name on this plaque.  I am super thankful to have the support of friends, family and colleagues that believe in service as much as I do."

+  While Midland Christian and The Woodlands Christian Academy will represent Texas private and parochial schools in this weekend's 7-on-7 Texas championship, former Shiner St. Paul and Houston St. Pius X head football coach Mike Jackson's Grand Oaks High School Grizzlies claimed a spot on Saturday by beating CISD foe Oak Ridge High School, 19-12.

+  Westbury Christian School assistant varsity football coach and HBU alum Jonathon McGugin announced on Twitter on Monday that he had "officially accepted a position to teach and coach at Fort Bend Christian Academy."  McGugin had been with the Wildcats program the last five years.  Former WCS AD and head football coach Mark Krimm said it was "so fun to watch you (McGugin) cut your teeth and grow as a teacher, coach and most importantly Man of God."

+ We still need to recap the TAPPS Sand Volleyball Tournament from this past week, as well as a couple of other activities recently.

+ We're also working on updating our entire list of former Texas private and parochial high school baseball athletes who are playing minor or major league baseball.
