LSCSN News and Notes; June 9, 2021

MLB.com reported on Tuesday that former Houston Westbury Christian Wildcat Dillon Thomas would be placed on a major league roster for the first time ever.  The 28-year-old has been on a 10-year journey to reach the big league and was having a fantastic spring at AAA Tacoma where he had six homers and 19 RBIs in 25 games while batting .338.

The website reported that he was being called up "to provide outfield depth with Kyle Lewis out for an extended period and Jarred Kelenic being sent down for a mental breather on Monday."

He did not see action in Tuesday night's 5-3 road loss to the Detroit Tigers.

+  Speaking of action, former Tomball Concordia Lutheran star Ke'Bryan Hayes, who returned from the 60-day injured list last week, thought he had hit his third home run in the last seven games, but as he watched the ball barely clear the right-field wall in the first inning he widely rounded first and missed the bag.

Before the next batter, Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler threw over to first baseman Max Muncy for the 1-3 putout that was confirmed by video review.

+  Tyler Junior College recently won the NJCAA Division III National Championship in baseball and Bullard Brook Hill School alum Miguel Vega played a huge part in it for the Apaches.

The Tyler Morning-Telegraph reported that he "hit a dramatic two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Apaches to a 5-4 win over Niagara County (New York) and the championship of the NJCAA Division III World Series on Wednesday (June 2) at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tennessee."

They went on to indicate that Vega, who has signed with Northwestern State in Natchitoches, was also named the tournament MVP and had 21 dingers on the year with 70 RBI's in 54 games and 153 total bases.  At the tournament itself, he was 7 for 15 (.467) with 10 RBIs and five home runs and two doubles in four games.

Also on the Apaches' roster was freshman pitcher McCrae Wiest of Plano Prestonwood Christian Academy.

+  Stanford LHP Jacob Palisch, who was on Dallas Jesuit's 2016 UIL state championship team with an 11-1 mark, was on the mound for the Cardinal's final out in their 11-8 win over Cal-Irvine that sends them to the NCAA Super Regionals.  Palish threw seven pitches and earned the save.  It was his 19th appearance of the season where he owns a 2-0 mark and a 4.11 ERA.

+  Episcopal School of Dallas announces Gregg Bennis as their new varsity head baseball coach, who joins the school from Broward College in Davie, Florida.

+  Next week from Wednesday, June 16 through Sunday, June 20, the Team USA Field Hockey Young Women's National Championship will be taking place in Virginia Beach, Virginia and four Texas private and parochial high school athletes will be competing.

St. John's School alums Sofia Castore, who attends Harvard, and Team USA goalie and Stanford great Kelsey Bing are participating as well as Kinkaid alum and Northwestern University athlete Annabel Skubisz and current Falcons sophomore Hope Haynes.

The week's complete schedule can be seen here.

+  Congratulations to Bellaire Episcopal alum Sarah Venker and CHANT Chargers great Donelle Johnson for their selection to the 2021 Southland Conference Softball All-Academic team for Houston Baptist University and Abilene Christian University, respectively.

Venker, who transferred to HBU after a freshman season at Ball State, carried a 4.0 GPA throughout her sophomore school year.  As a pitcher, she appeared in 14 games, starting five and going 3-1 with a 3.63 ERA.

Johnson not only carried a 3.55 GPA as a redshirt senior, but played the utility role for ACU as well as anybody could as she led the Wildcats at the plate batting .351, slugging for .553 and reaching base nearly half the time with a mark of .430.  She also led ACU in runs with 24.

She played in 42 games this season, starting 32 and came to ACU from the Christian Homeschool Athletes of North Texas (CHANT) Chargers where she helped them win the NACA national title in 2013.

+  High school writer Brian Gossett of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram released on Tuesday his newspaper's annual high school boys basketball all-area team on Tuesday and five private schoolers earned recognition.

Fort Worth Christian landed junior Alex Bossinakis on the first team while teammate senior Alec Zambie was a second-team selection.

Third teamers included Arlington Grace Prep's Aurian Bidgoli (senior) and Grapevine Faith Christian's Josh Davis (junior) and Grant Rein (sophomore).

+  Congratulations to Houston The Village School's Karlie Sampson for signing with the Baptist Bible College (MO) Patriots women's basketball program.  BBC competes in the Association of Christian College Athletics.
