LSCSN News and Notes; June 8, 2021

Arlington Grace Prep alum Zach Thompson became the first Miami Marlin in franchise history to make his major league debut at Fenway Stadium as he took the loss after giving up four hits and two runs in three innings of work.

After the game Marlins manager Don Mattingly talked about Thompson's debut on MLB.com saying, "He's fine.  We had seen the play at the end of the third (where he pulled a muscle on a throw to first).  He was probably 10 pitches from his pitch count. We were going to try and send him out there even to get after two hitters with our bullpen the way it was tonight.  Mel (Stottlemyre, pitching coach) was not totally comfortable the way he threw the ball; thought he was a little tentative.  Coming out of the game was more precaution than anything."

"Guy is probably going to be making more starts. I was happy with the way he threw the ball.  I htought he threw the ball well for coming into this ballpark against that team.  Thought he stayed on the attack.  Happy about that.  I think he kind of survived that."

+ Yesterday, we told you about the Texas private and parochial high school athletes on the University of Texas Longhorns baseball team that advanced to the NCAA Super Regional.  Well, Dallas Baptist University will be making its first trip in ten years - and just the second in school history - after coming from behind against Oregon State to win 8-5 on Monday afternoon and a couple of our own are along for the ride.

RHP redshirt sophomore Zach Heaton from Houston's Second Baptist School and fellow righthander sophomore Cole Reeves is an alum of Dallas Shelton School.  Heaton is 2-1 in 11 relief appearances with an ERA of 7.24 while Reeves is 0-1 in 12 trips out of the bullpen and an ERA of 6.59.  Also on the roster is Jared Pettitte, who spent his senior season at Second Baptist School playing for Lance Berkman and helping the Eagles to the 2016 TAPPS state championship.  Pettitte is 1-0 in 13 trips to the mound, including four starts, for an ERA of 5.81.
