1971 TCIL Baseball: Indians Leave For State Tournament

The St. Mary's Indian baseball teams heads for Houston and the State TCIL Baseball Tournament Thursday, after having extended their winning streak to 11 straight, after disposing of St. Anthony's of San Antonio, 9-3, and Burnet 12-0 in their final regular games.

The Indians will enter the tournament with a season record of 15-6, as the meet last year's state champion Corpus Christi Academy team Friday at 4:30 p.m.  Should they win over Corpus, the St. Mary's nine will play again at 9 a.m. Saturday.

In their game with St. Anthony's last Wednesday, the visitors scored two runs in the second, and the Indians scored once each in the third and fourth innings and then went ahead 3-2 as they scored again in the sixth.  The Indians, however, put the game out of reach with a six run outburst in the sixth, while limiting their opponents to one in the top of the seventh and last frame.

David Petsch and Mike Hartmann shared hurling duties and James Roeder hit a homer in the fifth to put his team in the lead.

In the Burnet game Monday, the Indians scored four runs in the first, five in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth for their 12 run output, while holding the Bulldogs scoreless.

James Roeder and David Petsch shared hurling duties.  Pat Usener led at bat with three hits out of four trips to the plate and Mike Sagebiel homered in the first to begin the Indian uprising.
