1981 TCIL Golf: Irish 3rd in TCIL golf meet

DALLAS - Cathedral High School is in third place, 29 strokes off the lead and eight shots out of second, after the first round Monday of the Texas Christian Interscholastic League boys' golf tournament here at the par 71 Sleepy Hollow Country Club course.

The Irish recorded a 345 total, trailing defending state champion Fort Worth Nolan (316) and Dallas Jesuit (337).

Junior Marcos Delgado is in 10th place for medalist and led Cathedral with a 14-over-par 85, followed by juniors Pat King and Alex Rainbolt with 86s, sophomore Jim McGee 88 and senior Joe Ellis 89.

With 18 holes to be played Tuesady, Cathedral Coach Mike Kennedy believes his team can lower their scores.  "I don't know if we can catch Nolan, but for sure we'd like to catch Jesuit for second," he said. "Last year, we led Nolan by 16 strokes and they caught us, so maybe we can reverse that this year."

Others in the team race are Houston Strake Jesuit (346), Dallas Bishop Dunne (352), Houston St. Thomas (362), Brownsville St. Joseph's (364), Beaumont Bishop Kelly (367) and Dallas Bishop Lynch (393).

Leading the medalist race after the first day was Nolan's Clark Dennis with a 76.
