1978 TCIL Golf: St. Joseph Golfers Win State Tourney

GRAND PRAIRIE - Medalist Clay Johnson put together consecutive rounds of 74 Thursday and Friday in leading St. Joseph Academy of Bronwsville to the Texas State Catholic Golf Tournament championship.

Herb Ames, also of St. Joseph Academy, had rounds of 76-77 to share second medalist honors with Grady Dickens of Dallas Bishop Dunne who won a playoff for the second place trophy.

St. Joe's winning team total of 619 gave the Bloodhound golfers a 21-stroke victory.  Dallas Jesuit finished second at 640 in the 13-team competition and defending champion Bishop Nolan placed third at 642.  St. Thomas of HOuston was fourth at 646 and Cathedral of El Paso placed fifth at 648.

Mark Johnson had a two-round total of 158.  Javier Vera shot 160 and Sy Griffey finished at 167 for St. Joe.
