By John Hines, Staff Writer

Dallas Jesuit in Class AAA and Victoria St. Joseph's in the Class AA division emerged in the drivers' seats as the only unbeaten teams in the TCIL State Baseball Tournament after second-day action Friday at Keefe Field and Holy Cross.

Jesuit took a 4-1 victory over Houston St. Thomas and now faces the War Eagles again for the state championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Keefe Field.  A St. Thomas victory would men another game immediately following.

St. Thomas came back to eliminate San Antonio's AAA entry, Holy Cross, with another one-run victory over the Knights, 3-2.  Holy Cross left 12 men on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth and men on first and third when the game ended.

Winning pitcher Paul Stavnoha singled in the deciding run for the War Eagles in the second after their first three batters produced two runs in the first, Luis Garcia singling, Rory Miggins tripling to the right field wall and Bill Tower hitting a sacrifice fly.

Holy Cross earlier eliminated Houston St. Pius, the team with the best record coming into the meet (24-5) and the defending AA champs, 9-4.  Eddie Hernandez homered over the left field wall in the fourth, then belted a two-run single when the Knights batted around in the fifth.  Bobby Santos allowed only four hits, three of them in the infield.

Victoria St. Joseph will meet Galveston O'Connell for the state title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Keefe, with another game following if O'Connell wins.

The Buccaneers pulled off the iron-man hat trick of three victories, in turn eliminating St. Anthony, 5-4; Laredo St. Joseph, 13-5, and Waco Reicher, 4-2.

Johnny McKenna swung the big bat for O'Connell, blasting a two-run homer and a double in the victory over Laredo, then rapping another two-bagger to break a 1-1 tie against Reicher in the seventh.  Mark Laine singled and Paul Montalbano doubled to drive in the other runs.

O'Connell had to come from behind with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a check-swing single by Mark Daulong, sacrifice bunt that was thrown away for a three-base error to let in the tying run and Randy Bolton's squeeze and third RBI.

Mark Chovanec's two singles produced three runs for Victoria St. Joe, while Mark Johnston pitched hitless ball until the fifth for Jesuit.
